Yasuhiro Sasajima

Chef Yasuhiro Sasajima was born in 1964 in Osaka, Japan. After graduating from high school with a keen interest in culinary arts, he entered the restaurant business, working in several Italian restaurants in the Kansai area. At a ripe young age of 24, he launched his career in the industry by becoming the executive chef of the restaurant ‘La Tour’ in Mino city. Later at 27 he was appointed Executive chef of ‘La Vita’ in Kyoto. In 1996, he opened ‘Il Pappalardo’ in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto and also appeared in the famous TV show ‘Iron Chef’ as the first Italian chef from the Kansai area. Venturing on his own for the first time as Restaurant Owner and Chef, he opened ‘Il Ghiottone’ in 2002 with the hope of introducing Kyoto to his own brand of Italian cuisine. His reputation for his excellent fusion dishes grew and eventually, another branch of ‘Il Ghiottone’ was opened in Marunouchi, Tokyo in 2005. In 2007, Chef Sasajima participated in a charity dinner hosted by Giorgio Armani himself and became the first Japanese chef to be part of the ‘Identita golose’ in Milan, Italy. Il Ghiottone has since expanded to a total of 4 restaurants including the ‘Trattoria Bar Il Ghiottone’ at Kawasume in Kyoto. Last year, Sasajima helped open ‘Code Kurkku’ in Yoyoghi, Tokyo.
